The Interpretation Center of Capelinhos Volcano, structure of Faial's
Natural Park, of the Regional Secretariat of Environment and the Sea, was nominated for European Museum of the Year 2012. At this stage reached 41 museums from 19 european countries, which of the nine portuguese museums applicants, only three have reached this stage, the Interpretation Center of Capelinhos Volcano, the Côa Museum and Hotel Convento de São Paulo.

This is an award given only to the best european museums, which stand out not only with regard to the quality and excellence of its contents, operation and architecture but also in areas such as cultural identity, sustainability and influence in society and in the environment where it belongs.

The European Museum of the Year (EMYA), award created in 1977, is presented annually by the European Museum Forum (EMF), under the auspices of the Europe Council. These organizations reward the european cooperation which regard to civil , human and democratic rights and cultural development.

The fact that it is the first museum in the Azores to be selected for this award, in a country where there has never been a winner, attests to the difficulty and quality needed for the application to be accepted by the Jury of the European Museum of the Year, consisting of the most distinguished european curators from various valences. The nomination itself is already a huge reputation, not to the Center, that with only 3 years of existence has proven several times to live up to the best it's done in the world, but also to the Faial's Natural Park, recently awarded the EDEN award (European Destinations of Excellence).

This year's edition takes place in Portugal in Penafiel city, in May, where will be known which museum will be presented with the EMYA.
