The Faial's Nature Park, which excels in innovation, was awarded by the European Commission, as the destination to represent Portugal in the EDEN program (European Destinations of Excellence) an important award presented by the European Union to the best places in Europe for sustainable tourism, which is first associated to our country. This program began in 2007 but 2011 is the first year in which Portugal participates.

The biodiversity and geodiversity of Faial are elements of our identity and heritage that requires a sustainable management, so that it can be appreciated by future generations. To preserve such precious natural treasure, the "Nature Park of Faial" was created. This structure allows the management of the territory, pointed at nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in order to improve tourism and the well-being of residents. The Faial's Natural Park has 13 protected areas that occupy 18% of land area, which corresponds to about 30 km2 and 189 km2 of sea area. In the Faial's Natural Park unique habitats are found, which are home to the specimens of endemic flora and fauna of the Azorean natural heritage.
