Corvo´s biosphere reserve's 5th anniversary

With the award, by the International Coordinating Council of the programme "man and the biosphere", in September 17, 2007, Corvo Island became part of the world network of biosphere reserves.

The "world biosphere reserve", which was commemorated on November 3, marked the beginning of the 2012 Open Park activities and simultaneously held the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the classification of Corvo Island as a biosphere reserve.

To mark this date, there was a prepared a session, which featured two presentations, the first by Dr. Fernando Ferreira, Director of the Natural Park, which through a multimedia presentation developed the theme: "your island is a biosphere reserve!". Highlighting environmental, economic and cultural characteristics of the Island, as being decisive for the prestigious award. Then listing the 3 basic functions to be biosphere reserve, highlighting the specificities of Corvo. He emphasized also the numerous potential of protected areas, warning however, the responsibility for its protection and preservation, not only as a contribution to the balance of the universe, but also as a valuable legacy for future generations. This will only be achieved through sustainable development.

The second presentation was given by Dr. Frederico Cardigos, Regional Director of Maritime Affairs that honoured this session with his presence.

The theme developed by the Regional Director for the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the classification of Corvo Island as a biosphere reserve, included an illustrated talk with a dedicated projection regarding the sea that surrounds this geographical unit. For an hour some species and habitats were described, in order to raise awareness to the present Scout Group (CNE) Corvo-1181 for sustained and responsible utilization of this “blue giant”, which are our oceans. This interesting presentation was prepared with the intention to get the juvenile recipients attentions, being illustrated with eight sets of pictures.

After the presentation, there was a debate and some issues were discussed. In the end the participants in this commemorative session learned about the potential of the seabed, particularly rich in mineral here in the Azores.
